The fire broke out at 12:19 in the Barros area of Janes, in the parish of Alcabideche, municipality of Cascais. Nine firefighters and three civilians have been injured so far. One victim suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to the emergency room of the Cascais hospital. The flames had already engulfed a fire truck and an abandoned house. The nursing home on Fernando Pessoa Street in Janes had to be evacuated.
Of the five injured firefighters, all minors, three were from the Agualva-Cacém corporation (caught in the fire of a burnt-out fire engine), one from the Algueirão-Mem Martins fire department and one from the Cascais fire department.
Wind is the main difficulty in fighting the flames, but the fire is close to completion and is considered under control.
This is a forested area, residential buildings are located approximately two to three kilometers from here.
There are 407 emergency personnel on site, supported by 124 ground and 9 air assets. The wind is strong and there are many sparks in the air.
