Death toll from floods in southern Mozambique rises to nine

The death toll from heavy rains and floods in southern Mozambique rose from seven to nine on Tuesday, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD).

The total number of people affected in the province and the city of Maputo is 39,225, with the Boane district, located 30 km south of the capital, the most affected, with 13,000 people affected in one way or another by heavy rains since February 7. and 13th.

According to INGD, a total of 7,600 houses were flooded.

About 15,000 people are accommodated in 13 accommodation centres.

Health centers and several schools were also damaged, leaving thousands of students without classes.

In terms of livelihoods, the organization estimates that 4,000 hectares of agricultural production have been lost and 73 fishing boats have been reported missing.

Mozambique is in the middle of the rainy season, which runs from October to April and has been particularly harsh, with 370 millimeters of rain falling in the Maputo region in the last week alone, nearly three times the expected average for each month. February.

Intense rain has affected part of South Africa’s eastern sub-region, with South Africa reporting 12 deaths on Tuesday and declaring a state of disaster in several provinces, including Mpumalanga, which borders Mozambique.
