The General Directorate of Prison Services (DGSP) allowed a 42-year-old prisoner, serving a seven-year, ten-month sentence in Vila Real for tax fraud estimated at 1.5 million euros, to travel some 80 kilometers (to Paços de Ferreira prison, in the Porto area), using a mobile phone and accompanied by at least two prison guards.
ABOUT CM It turned out that the intimate visit took place last Monday. DGSP confirmed CM that “Vila Real Prison does not have its own facilities for intimate visits and, in order to achieve this right, collaborates with the Paços de Ferreira and Vale do Sousa prisons, as well as with the Santa Cruz do Bispo (women’s) prison when the imprisoned partner is also in prison.”
In this particular case CMthe companion of the prisoner Vila-Real is not detained. However, he lives in the municipality of Paredes. Therefore, the intimate visit was allowed to take place in Paços de Ferreira.
Without wishing to talk about a specific case, DGSP clarified CM that “the measures are subject to specific rules that must be respected, regardless of the kilometre distance underlying their implementation.”
