On Wednesday evening, the Aveiro Rescue Station rescued a crew member of a fishing vessel that fell into the water about 22 kilometers northwest of the port of Aveiro, it was announced this Thursday.
According to a statement from the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the alert was received at around 10:30 p.m. through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Lisbon).
ANM said the fishing vessel’s crew member, a 26-year-old Indonesian national, fell into the water while the vessel was sailing about 12 miles (approximately 22 kilometers) northwest of the port of Aveiro.
He adds that the crew of the Aveiro rescue station and elements of the local command of the Aveiro Marine Police, the ambulance and resuscitation medical service (VMER) and the Ilhavo volunteer firefighters were immediately deployed.
“Upon arrival at the vessel, the rescue station crew discovered that the vessel’s captain had pulled the victim out of the water, stabilized him, and subsequently delivered him to the pier of the local Maritime Department, where VMER employees were waiting to help him,” the same note says.
According to the ANM, Ilyavu’s volunteer firefighters then took the victim to the hospital department.
The local command of the Aveiro naval police claimed responsibility for the incident.
