The home where two young people died and another was injured by carbon monoxide poisoning was previously an illegal nursing home. According to authorities, the premises were in poor condition and were closed by the Social Security Administration in 2017. The owners of the home have not changed, and in total they have seen the underground premises closed by the authorities three times. Despite problems with the courts, they continued their activities.
On February 10, 2017, 10 elderly people who were in the illegal home were removed and transferred to other institutions. The authorities realized that the bedridden users there were confined to one space, which was used for sleeping and eating. The bathrooms were dirty and the smell was nauseating. The kitchen was also dilapidated, with gas cylinders next to the stove. The elderly were given expired food. Users paid between 300 and 550 euros.
According to the deputy, even after the house was closed, the activity continued. “Ignoring the inconsistencies identified during the inspections, the defendants carried out expansion work to increase the number of dependencies on the property, namely extensions. After that, in order to make the premises next to the residential building for the elderly profitable, the defendants began renting out rooms,” the indictment says.
DETAILS
DEATH OF DEPUTIES CAN BE AVOIDED
The MP has no doubt that the deaths could have been avoided, pointing out that the defendant João Loura has an obligation to sort out the problem or at least stop renting the premises, since he had a university degree in civil engineering.
SHOCK, 3RD VICTIM WAS FROM BRAZIL
Ilher Fraga, 20, came to Portugal in search of a better future. His mother came with him, and when he landed in Brazil, he learned that his son had been found dead in the room he had just rented.
DEFENDANTS CITE OTHER REASONS
Goreti Gomes, 53, told the court he did not know the cause of death. As for the first young man, he said he thought he had died of an overdose. And the second was hospitalized because he had not eaten. The third victim, who eventually died, said he thought he had felt ill after taking diet pills.
