Maria Leonor, a four-year-old Portuguese girl, drowned in a swimming pool in Casals, near Gourdon, France, last Wednesday evening. Police are investigating the circumstances of the death and have opened an inquest.
According to French newspapers, the death occurred in a private swimming pool in an isolated home.
The girl’s family is from Moreles, in Marco de Canaveses. The body is expected to be transported to Portugal next Tuesday.
The Moreles cultural and leisure centre has already publicly expressed its regret over the girl’s death: “We received this sad news with great shock.”
In light of the death, the cultural center announced on its Facebook page that some events planned at the parish this weekend would be canceled “as a mark of respect.” The flag was flown at half-staff on Saturday.
