Portugal won the silver medal at the fourth European Computer Olympiad for Girls, which took place last week in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, the Association for the Promotion and Development of the Information Society announced on Monday.
Laura Muliar, a 12th grade student from the Ponte de Lima school group, was the medalist from Portugal, a country that was participating in the competition for the first time.
This year, the student has already taken second place in the National Olympiad in Informatics and won a bronze medal in the Ibero-American Olympiad in Informatics.
The European Computer Olympiad for Girls, which took place this year from July 21 to 27 in the Netherlands and attracted 195 participants from 56 countries, aims to “encourage women’s participation and excellence in the field of computing.”
In September, Egypt will host international IT Olympiads with the participation of Portugal.
In Portugal, the Computer Olympiads are organised by the Association for the Promotion and Development of the Information Society in collaboration with the University of Porto and Pryston University in the USA.
This competition is open to elementary and middle school students.
