The Israeli army confirmed it carried out a retaliatory attack on Tuesday against a senior Hezbollah commander in a residential area of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, killing a woman and wounding seven others, Reuters reported.
The retaliation was prompted by the deaths of 12 children and young people in the Golan Heights in northern Israel when a rocket hit them while they were on a soccer field on Saturday.
“The Israel Defense Forces carried out a selective attack in Beirut against a commander responsible for the murder of children in the Golan Heights and the killing of many other Israeli civilians. There are no changes in the home front at this time. Command,” the military said in a post shared on X.
Local sources in Lebanon, cited by international agencies, reported an explosion in the southern suburb of Beirut known as Dahye, a major Hezbollah stronghold.
According to the newspaper HaaretzThe Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted Fawad Sukar, considered Hezbollah’s number two and responsible for the Islamic group’s military activities. However, there are reports that Fawad Sukar survived the attack.
After the rocket attack on the Golan Heights, Beirut was on guard against predictable Israeli retaliation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised a “tough response” from Israel to the attack that killed 12 children and teenagers.
“The State of Israel cannot leave this attack unanswered. Our response will come and it will be tough,” the prime minister assured, hours after the Israeli military cabinet gave the executive branch the green light to respond “appropriately” to the Hezbollah attack.
