The football season is almost here and it brings with it important news for one of the country’s main export industries. All three clubs that make up the Portuguese dream already have presidents of the new wave. After the rescue of Sporting by Varandas and the handing over of the certificate of the new Benfica by Rui Costa, Porto still had to embark on the path of rationality, a path that eventually came to Dragao with André’s overwhelming victory in the elections. Villas – Okay. So the supporters know that the era of dinosaur presidents who ran institutions according to old principles, not always clear and transparent, is definitively over. However, this is a loss-making industry to which Portuguese talent is emigrating earlier and earlier.
The departure of young João Neves to France, which now seems inevitable, is the latest example of premature export that could have negative consequences for the player’s career. But from the clubs’ point of view, it is the most rational decision, since the financial health of Portuguese football depends on these sales. The Benfica president is right to let the player go, just as Sporting and Porto bosses will surely do with other stars in the coming days. Football must live within its means, and this is only possible with rational decisions.
