The home in Rio Maior, in the district of Santarem, was closed and 14 users were transferred to family homes and other institutions as part of an investigation into abuse of the elderly, the GNR said.
The residential home for the elderly was closed on Tuesday by soldiers from the Territorial Command of Santarém through the Centre for Investigation and Support of Specific Victims (NIAVE).
According to the GNR, the inspection of the home was carried out “as part of an investigation into abuse of the elderly in conjunction with the Leziria-Tejo Social Welfare and Health Authorities.”
“As a result of the action, NIAVE identified six employees and 14 elderly people aged 75 to 95 who conducted investigations and collected evidence as part of the investigation, and a report on drug use was drawn up,” the statement said.
During the inspection, the Lisbon and Tejo Valley Social Security Inspectorate (LVT) prepared three reports on occupational health and safety issues.
GNR said that given the conditions found in the home, “the structure was closed and the 14 elderly people were transferred to family homes and senior living facilities.”
The facts were referred to the Rio Maior Court of Justice.
