Want to see the top of the meteor shower? Put August 12 on your calendar

The meteor shower peaks on the 12th of this month, so with a starry sky and poor city lighting you can see about 90 meteors per hour.

The so-called Perseids have been active since the 17th of last month and will be visible until the 24th. This phenomenon occurs every year, around this time, following the Alpha Capricorn and Delta Aquarids, which were visible last month and preceded the calendar. The Draconids, whose peak visibility will be on October 8 and 9. The meteor shower occurs as the Earth approaches fragments accompanying the comet in its movement.

These small fragments acquire an intense glow and ignite when they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. The best time to observe is from 10:00 PM to 4:00 AM, unless the sky is cloudy, which would reduce visibility. Observing the dust from falling stars is of great interest to the population, so 75 registrations at the Geoscope-Fajam astronomical observatory in the municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra are already sold out. Admission is free, viewing is on the 11th from 10:00 PM.
