Electric vehicle sales in Portugal rose 23% in July compared to the same period last year, with 3,317 new passenger cars registered, according to the Portuguese Automobile Association. From January to July, it increased by 14% compared to the same period last year, up 22,531 units registered.
In contrast, sales of light goods and electrified heavy goods fell by 32.7% and 63% year-on-year, respectively. In the first seven months of the year, the opposite trend was observed for electrified passenger cars, whose sales increased by 9.1% compared to the period from January to July 2023. In aggregate terms, this market reached 1,440 units. Sales of electrified heavy goods vehicles fell sharply (-62.1%) from January to July compared to the same period last year, with 61 vehicles registered.
According to data released Friday by Eurostat, the share of cars running on pure electricity in Portugal in 2023 was 1.87%, above the European average of 1.7%. Of the 27 EU countries, Portugal was 11th with the highest share of electric cars in the car park (111 thousand out of 5.9 million cars). Ten countries had a share of electric cars above 2%, with Denmark the largest (7.1%). Among new registrations in the public sector, the share of electric cars running on pure batteries increased by 14.6% in 2023, bringing the total to 4.48 million.
