Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday appointed economist Muhammad Yunus, a 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, to head an interim government after the name was suggested by anti-government protest leaders.
Yunus will take over the executive branch after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sacked and fled Bangladesh on Monday, Shahabuddin’s spokesman Mohammad Joynal Abedin told Efe.
Representatives of the student movements that organised weeks of anti-government protests that toppled Hasina and left more than 400 people dead, said at a news conference that the decision was taken after a meeting with Bangladesh’s head of state and those responsible for the security forces.
