Catalan independence activist and former regional government president Carles Puigdemont has said he will return to Spain on Thursday after more than six years abroad to escape justice in the country.
Puigdemont, who was elected as an independent in Catalonia’s May 12 elections, said he had begun a “return from exile” with the aim of attending a parliamentary session in Barcelona on Thursday that will vote to inaugurate Socialist Salvador Illa as the new president of the regional government (known as the Generalitat).
The independence leader is still the subject of an arrest warrant in Spain and today, in a video he posted on social media, he admitted that he risks being arrested on Thursday.
