A 53-year-old man who had been on the run for nine years was detained in Vila Nova de Paiva to serve an effective prison sentence, the National Republican Guard (GNR) said on Thursday.
According to a press release from the Viseu PNP Territorial Command, through the Vila Nova de Paiva territorial post, a 53-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday to serve an effective prison sentence.
The arrest took place in the municipality of Vila Nova de Paiva, Viseu district, following “information that the suspect, who had been on the run for nine years, was in the area.”
According to the document, Polish People’s Republic soldiers went to the location, where they approached the man and after confirming his identity, “it was possible to verify the existence of a warrant for his arrest.”
The order, issued by the Juízo de Competência Genérica de Sátão, was to “serve an effective prison term of one year and six months, in accordance with the final and non-appealable decision taken in November 2015.”
The actual prison sentence was imposed “for offences involving driving without a valid licence, active corruption and aggravated disobedience.”
“The man was arrested and sent to Viseu prison to serve the sentence he was sentenced to.”
