After the PJ, the PSP and the GNR, the prison guards and the armed forces, among others, it is now the lifeboat crew of the Socorros Institute in Naufragos (ISN) – just over a hundred – who are demanding from the government “the assignment of a risk premium”, a long-standing demand of those who go to sea in the worst conditions to save lives. And they want it to be “in line with what has recently been guaranteed to the security forces and services, as well as what has been envisaged for military and paramilitary personnel”. They state that the special career of the ISN lifeboat crew is “of particular importance for a coastal State like Portugal, since it includes functions in coastal sea rescue, shipwreck rescue and bathing assistance, and the technical and physical requirements of this profession are very significant.” “This is the most basic justice (…) given the risk factors in which they operate,” they ask. “They are assigned very difficult functional duties, since they are required to perform duties in difficult meteorological and oceanographic conditions, sometimes even extremely difficult when assigned to them by the rescue service,” since this is a profession with “particular physical and psychological wear and tear.”

The National Port Authority Workers Union, which represents them, requested a hearing with the oversight body, the Defense Department, on April 12, which did not take place until July 17. And on July 26, they elaborated on that request in a letter to the chief of staff of the assistant secretary of state for national defense.
