A group of thieves managed to pull off a million-dollar heist in the small village of Alvarroines, Marvão province, with a cunning plan worthy of a movie, with arson to extinguish evidence and a safe containing gold, a collection of watches and dozens of valuable coins found in the Guadiana reservoir by an off-duty police officer.
The incident occurred last weekend when the businessman and his family left home to attend a local party. Police believe the group had been following the family for some time and took advantage of the moment to carry out their plan. They broke into the victim’s car to take the house key, which they then used to enter without breaking down the door.
They had time to choose what to take. They put the safe in the victim’s van, which they also stole, and fled towards Spain. But on the EN379, between Elvas and Campo Mayor, they abandoned the car and set it on fire. The trail of the robbers was lost there.
But the next day, Sunday, a police officer on duty discovered the safe broken into and empty in the waters of the Guadiana.
According to the newspaper Sul Ibérico, the safe was rescued by the Badajoz firefighters and handed over to the local police, but no information about the robbery was recorded on the Spanish side. The businessman himself, who was now informed of the discovery, traveled to Spain to confirm it. Inside the safe was only the key to the burnt-out van.
