Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed for the first time that Ukrainian forces had launched a military operation on Russian territory, saying the aim of the invasion was to “transfer the war to the aggressor.”
“The chief of staff informed me about the situation on the front line and our actions to transfer the war to the territory of the aggressor. Ukraine proves that it is capable of restoring justice and exerting the necessary pressure on the aggressor,” Zelensky said in a video published on Saturday evening.
A Kiev government source said Sunday that the invasion was aimed at “destabilizing” the enemy. “We are on the offensive. The goal is to stretch the enemy, inflict maximum losses and destabilize the situation in Russia, showing that it is unable to defend its own borders,” the official said, adding that “several thousand” Ukrainians were participating in the operation, not just the 1,000 that Russia had announced.
The incursion into the Kursk border region began on Tuesday, and Ukrainian forces have already advanced some 30 kilometers, capturing part of the strategic town of Sudzha and forcing the evacuation of more than 76,000 civilians. At least 13 people were injured Saturday night when debris from a Ukrainian drone crashed into a nine-story building in the city of Kursk.
