What the prime minister has just said is that home prices that are astronomical will remain astronomical,” Mariana Mortagua told reporters as a first reaction to the measures presented by the government.

Warning that “prices will not go down,” the BE deputy said that “part of the tax measures and incentives, for example, already existed and turned out to be ineffective.”

Regarding the set of measures that “force the state to finance high incomes and large bank fees”, Mariana Mortagua was also very critical and pointed out that “banks can practice usurious rates, they can charge payments that families cannot cope with, and this state and it is the taxpayers who will be participating in these bank contributions.”

“I can guarantee that in a year we will be in the same place talking about the same housing crisis as today, because foreign interests and non-residents with a lot of money will continue to buy houses in big cities that residents cannot buy, because that they have no money because empty houses will remain empty, because the law on rent still allows very short-term contracts without protecting the stability of these contracts,” he lamented.

For BE, the measures taken by the government this Thursday do not solve the housing problem because “they are a tax surcharge for those who have made a profit, they are a free tax on speculation and will not drive home prices down like the prime minister did. …so well recognized.”
