The PNP has closed an illegal home in Oliveira de Azemeis in Aveiro district and charged a couple suspected of elder abuse, security forces said Tuesday.
In a statement, the GNR said that a man and a woman, aged 51 and 46, were named as defendants last Thursday in an investigation into abuse of the elderly in an illegal nursing home in the town of Pindelo, in the municipality of Oliveira de Azemeis.
According to the GNR, the facility in question “did not meet the conditions of accommodation and health care,” which led to the transfer of six elderly people, four women and two men aged between 61 and 93, to an institution run by Private Social Insurance Solidarity (IPSS).
“Following the police investigation, the premises were immediately closed and the names of the accused were released – a man and a woman aged 51 and 46,” the same statement said.
In this action, inspectors from the Investigation Department of the Inspection Department of the Social Security Centre of Coimbra participated and the facts were referred to the Santa Maria da Feira Court.
