The first stage of the 2024 Tour of Spain by Bike (La Vuelta), which takes place on Saturday, will require traffic restrictions until Sunday between Jeronimos Monastery (Lisbon), Torre (Oeiras) and Cascais, the municipalities said.
This year, La Vuelta will be held in three stages on Portuguese territory: it will start on Saturday with a 12-km time trial, starting near Mosteiro dos Jeronimos (Lisbon) and finishing in Praia da Torre (Oeiras), and will continue on Sunday between Cascais and Ourém, and on Monday from Lausã to Castelo Branco.
In connection with the Spanish race and cycling tour Pedala Portugal Bike Tour Lisbon/Oeiras 2024, the Lisbon Municipality has announced several traffic restrictions in the capital, including a suspension of traffic between Wednesday and Saturday in Praça do Império, Avenidas da India, Brasilia and surrounding areas.
The road restrictions include Avenida de Brasilia (Algés-Lisbon direction) from 08:00 Monday to 00:00 Sunday, with the right lane restricted to the tourist bus stops between Padrão dos Descobrimentos and Estação Fluvial de Belém, and Torre de Belém, from 08:00 Wednesday to 21:00 Thursday, with increased air conditioning on the main street parallel to the Vela Latina restaurant.
In Praça do Império, from 08:00 Thursday to 00:00 Sunday, traffic will be restricted between Rua D. Lourenço de Almeida and Largo dos Jerónimos, with traffic moving along Rua Bartolomeu Dias, Av. do Restelo and Rua dos Jerónimos.
Access to vehicular traffic will be prohibited on several arteries of Av. da India, namely: Rua Damião de Góis, Travessa do Forte da Areia, Av. de Brasília (via the Pedrous viaduct), Av. da Torre de Belém (with corridor traffic to allow access to Rua Fernão Mendes Pinto), Lagoa Henriques, Belém Cultural Centre car park (entrance via Bartolomeu Dias), Bus Museum car park (entrance via Av. da India) and Mesia Musinho de Albuquerque.
Traffic will be closed on the side street Vela Latina from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Thursday, between Rua Mécia Mouzinho Albuquerque and Av. Torre de Belém on Av. from 12:00 am on Friday to 12:00 am on Sunday, on Av. da India from 4:00 pm on Friday to 12:00 am on Sunday, between Avenida da Torre de Belém and Alcântara and Avenida da Torre de Belém to Plaza Dom Manuel I (Algés) and on Rua dos Jerónimos from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturday.
Public transport will also be restricted from 8am Thursday until 11pm Saturday, with this expected to have a significant impact on the Carris fleet, with detours to Rua Bartolomeu Dias, Avinguda do Restelo and Rua Jeronimos, as traffic is prohibited in Plaza de l’Empire, preventing trams from crossing the road during this period.
In a statement, the Chamber of Oeiras announced that, in order to host the various events related to La Vuelta, the parks and parking spaces in the Tower, next to the restaurant A Carruagem and the Feitoria do Colégio Militar will be closed from 10:00 pm Thursday-Friday until 1:00 am Sunday, and in front of the Fort of São Julião da Barra and Praia da Torre from 6:00 am Friday until 1:00 am Sunday.
Avenida Marginal will be partially closed in both directions between Rotonda de Carcavelos and Alto da Barra/Inatel Oeiras exit from 08:00 on Friday to 01:00 on Sunday, with access and traffic limited to Oeiras Marina, subject to accreditation. and Oeiras Viva management (dealers, boats, suppliers), as well as Alameda do Alto da Barra will be closed from 06:00 to 20:00 on Saturday, with traffic limited to residents.
In addition to the presentation of the teams and cyclists of La Vuelta in Jardim da Torre de Belém (15 August, 17:00), on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:00 there will also be the La Vuelta Youth Race: 30:00, organised in partnership with the Portuguese Cycling Federation and aimed at the youth category (young people from 12 to 16 years old), from Avenida da India to Alcântara.
The Pedala Portugal cycling tour between Praia da Império and Praia da Torre will take place on Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00 before the start of the Lisbon-Oeiras time trial “La Vuelta” at 3:30 pm from Praia da Império to the Tower.
In Cascais, according to the city council, traffic restrictions will take place from 10:00 pm on Saturday to 4:00 pm on Sunday, with the Bay of Cascais, Avenue D. Carlos I and Avenida da República closed.
The Marechal Carmona car park will also be closed during the same period, while the Carcavelos car park will close from 00:00 to 20:00 on Saturday.
