World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced Wednesday that he had extended standing recommendations against the chronic risk of the Mpox virus in several African countries for a year following a new outbreak.
“I have decided to extend the standing recommendation for another year to help countries take action to control the chronic risk of smallpox,” Ghebreyesus told a WHO emergency committee meeting on the new “monkeypox” outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRCongo), but also in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, where no cases have been reported so far.
“Stopping these outbreaks will require a tailored and comprehensive response, as always with communities at the centre,” the official said, adding that $15 million (€13.6 million) was needed for surveillance, preparedness and response activities.
