Eleven of the 18 areas of mainland Portugal, particularly in the centre and south of the territory, are under yellow warning this Thursday due to hot weather, while orange warnings are expected for Portalegre, Evora and Beja on Friday and Saturday, IPMA said.
This Thursday, a public holiday in Portugal, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow alert for the areas of Braga, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Santarem, Portalegre, Lisbon, Evora, Setúbal, Beja and Faro, with a forecast of “maintained high maximum temperatures”.
There will be no weather warnings in seven areas of mainland Portugal this Thursday: Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Bragança, Porto, Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda.
Also due to the hot weather from Friday to Saturday, three areas are under orange warning: Portalegre, Evora and Beja, where “very high maximum temperatures persist,” as indicated by IPMA.
In addition to these three districts under orange alert, 11 more are under yellow alert between Friday and Saturday, namely: Braga, Vila Real, Bragança, Guarda, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon, Setúbal and Faro.
As for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, IPMA issued a yellow alert this Thursday for the north, south coast and mountainous regions, forecasting an orange alert between Friday and Saturday for the south coast and mountainous regions.
In the Azores, the weather forecast has issued a yellow warning from Thursday to Friday for the western, central and eastern groups of the archipelago.
A yellow warning, the least serious on the scale of three, is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation, while an orange warning, the second most serious, is issued whenever a meteorological situation of moderate to high risk arises.
