Russia sentences woman to 12 years in prison for donating to pro-Ukraine institution

Ksenia Khavana, a woman of Russian and North American citizenship, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Russian court for donating 46 euros to a charity supporting Ukraine, reports Sky News.

The woman, accused of treason, was detained in Yekaterinburg in southwestern Russia in February. Ksenia Khavana, 33, pleaded guilty in a closed-door trial last week.

“The court found Ksenia Karelina (maiden name) guilty of treason and sentenced her to 12 years in prison,” the Sverdlovsk Regional Court reported.

According to the same source, Ksenia received American citizenship after marrying an American in 2021.

She was returning to Russia earlier this year to visit family when she was detained.
