750 thousand workers are already employed in government services

According to the Directorate General of Administration and Employment, at the end of June, almost 750 thousand people were employed, which is 3,831 jobs more than in the same period last year. The average monthly profit calculated for services was 2,082.6 euros, which is a deviation of 8.4% compared to April 2023.

The change in civil servants’ salaries compared to last year is due, according to the State Employment Statistics Summary, to “an increase in the average monthly basic remuneration and other components of earnings, such as subsidies, regular allowances and payment for additional working hours.”

More than half (53.8%) of public administration employees were concentrated in the positions of operational assistants (169.6 thousand employees), primary and secondary school teachers (141.6 thousand) and technical assistants (91.7 thousand), according to the document now published.

The increase in the number of workers registered by June (3,831 people) was mainly due to the careers of senior technical specialists, whose number increased by 2,320 people.

The number of public employees thus returned to the highest level of the statistical series that began in 2011. At the end of June, they represented 14.7% of the employed population in Portugal. On the other hand, more than 62% of public administration employees were women. However, the municipalities had the lowest level of feminization: women held 46.2% of positions.
