Five aircraft put out fire in Arcos de Valdevez

The rural fire that broke out early this Saturday morning in the parish of Cabreiros, in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, continues to rage on two fronts, but no home is at risk, a civil defence source said.

Speaking to Lusa, a source from the Alto Minho subregional command said that “five aircraft and a total of 53 combat vehicles and 14 vehicles” from the Monção, Ponte da Barca and Arcos de Valdevez fire brigade were involved in extinguishing the fire in the Viana do Castelo area.

According to the same source, extinguishing the fire is made difficult by its “inaccessibility” as the fire is spreading through mountainous terrain.

Much of the country’s northern and central interior remains at maximum risk of rural fires this Saturday, as well as the Algarve municipalities of Monchique, Silves, Loulé, São Bras de Alportel and Tavira, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere said.

According to information available on the website of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the municipalities at highest risk include the areas of Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Portalegre, Santarém and Faro.

Already, about a hundred municipalities in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Vila Real, Viseu, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon, Portalegre, Beja and Faro are at very high risk of fire.
