Fire forces Funchal council to remove animals from municipal nursery as precaution

Funchal City Council in Madeira has pre-emptively removed some animals from the municipal Vasco Gil nursery after a fire devastated the region, although this removes “any immediate danger”.

The municipality said in a statement that “the weakest and oldest animals are being removed immediately,” adding that “preventive measures have been prepared, namely transport vehicles and the identification of places where animals can be placed in case an urgent withdrawal is necessary.”

The municipality recalls that, as reported on Friday, it has decided to strengthen the surveillance and operational readiness of its services.

“The Funchal administration expresses its solidarity with the population directly affected by the fires and has already provided all the necessary cooperation to neighbouring municipalities,” the statement also said.

A fire broke out in Madeira that started on Wednesday morning in a remote area of the Serra de Agua district in the municipality of Ribeira Brava and then spread to the neighbouring municipality of Camara de Lobos.

According to a report by the regional Minister of Health and Civil Protection, Pedro Ramos, at 13:00 the fire broke out in Encumeada (Ribeira Brava), as well as in the parishes of Curral das Freiras and Jardim da Serra in Camara, Wolves.

The fighting on various fronts involved 54 operational personnel, supported by 18 vehicles and a helicopter from the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service, as well as units from the PSP and the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation.

At around 3:30 p.m., the Regional Civil Protection Secretariat announced in a statement that the region would receive 80 members of the Special Fire Service in the next few hours to help put out the fire.

In a note, the agency said that “resources on the ground have been reinforced and forestry teams attached to the National Republican Guard have been activated,” without specifying the number of resources involved.
