The ninth and final animal-themed artwork by secretive street artist Banksy was removed Friday night “for safety reasons” from London Zoo in England, according to a report Sky News.
A mural of a gorilla holding up part of a shutter that allowed birds and a sea lion to escape has been replaced with a replica and a poster reading “Banksy was here”.
The artwork’s display boosted the zoo’s visitor numbers over five days last week, but the decision to remove it was made to prevent possible theft or damage.
During the exhibition, the artwork was protected by transparent plastic and protective equipment.
“We are thrilled by the joy this artwork has already brought to so many people, but most of all we are incredibly grateful to Banksy for putting wildlife at the centre of attention. It was an important moment in our history that we want to preserve properly,” said the zoo’s director of operations, Catherine England.
The zoo has not yet announced what it will do with the Banksy works. Two of Banksy’s latest animal-themed works were damaged and one was stolen.
