The Spanish Government will prohibit the contracting of electricity by telephone, except at the initiative of the consumer

The Government of Spain will prohibit that electricity marketers perform advertising either hiring practices not requested by the user by by telephoneunless there is an express request by the consumer or the call is originated by his/her own initiative.

It is one of the points incorporated in the draft royal decree, which is currently in process public hearing. Companies will therefore be able to present their objections. Similarly, door-to-door contracting for electricity and natural gas has been prohibited since 2018.

The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) denounces that the marketing companies They are not transparent neither before, nor after, nor during the hiring process, and that engage in deceptive practices.

Teresa Ribera, Spain’s Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, also states that “numerous complaints have been registered from consumers who receive misleading telephone calls from different marketing companies, without consent, and which can lead to supply contracts with deficiencies or without informed consent.”
