Israel finds bodies of six more hostages

Israeli troops returned the bodies of six more hostages taken by Hamas in the Oct. 7 attacks in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, increasing pressure on Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to accept a ceasefire that would allow the remaining hostages to be returned to terrorist hands.

The bodies were found by the army during a “complex operation” in Hamas tunnels near Khan Yunis, and the exact circumstances of their deaths are unknown. The victims were identified as Yagev Buchstab, Alexander Dansig, Avraham Munder, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell and Haim Peri. With his death confirmed, 109 hostages remain to be found, a third of whom are believed to be dead.

The return of the bodies adds to pressure from the families of the hostages on the Netanyahu government to negotiate a truce with Hamas to free the remaining hostages. According to the US, the Israeli prime minister accepted the latest version of the ceasefire deal presented to him on Monday by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, with the ball now in the hands of Hamas, which says the proposal has undergone significant changes to the version it presented in early July and agreed to.

Meanwhile, at least 12 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday in an Israeli attack on a school housing refugees in the Gaza Strip. Israel says the attack was aimed at Hamas terrorists hiding there.
