The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) seized more than 400 kg of live bivalve molluscs worth more than €4,500 in July for non-compliance with regulations in retail and markets, it was announced on Wednesday.
The seizures took place as part of several inspections carried out in July by the Southern Regional Unit (ASAE Lisbon Operational Unit) in markets and retail establishments to check compliance with rules such as the origin of the bivalve, the identification mark, the exposure temperature, the method of packaging the products and more.
“87 business entities were inspected, a criminal case was opened for spoilage of food products and 25 cases of administrative violations, the main violations of which are the placement of live bivalves, echinoderms, tunicates and live marine gastropods on the market without observing the established conditions” and failure to comply with the rules and requirements applicable to the production and handling of live bivalves, the ASAE statement said.
Since the beginning of the year, GASU has inspected more than 340 business entities (catering establishments, municipal markets and retail establishments), as a result of which four criminal cases were opened, 80 cases of administrative offences and about nine tons of live bivalve mollusks were seized, with a total value exceeding 71,000 euros.
