The lack of unofficial lawyers registered in the lists for September could paralyze dozens of processes. According to the Bar Association (OA), 60% of municipalities do not have lawyers who could replace them next month, which means a reduction in the total number of registered people by more than 90% compared to previous years.
The failure to register the lawyers is linked to a protest that began this month, with professionals demanding an update to the fee tables charged by the Access to Law and Court System, which have not changed for several years.
The OA proposes to include a budget of around 20 million euros in the 2025 state budget to cover this upgrade. If this is not done, there may not be any lawyers available to represent the accused in September.
On average, the Social Security Service receives 400 requests for legal assistance every day from citizens who cannot afford a lawyer. In 2023, 140,000 people turned to unofficial lawyers. An unofficial lawyer receives an average of 389 euros for each assistance provided.
