Builder of luxury yacht that sank in Sicily raises doubts, claims design was ‘unsinkable’

“Sailboats are known as some of the safest boats because their design and keel make them unsinkable,” said Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, the company responsible for building and selling the luxury yacht that sank in Sicily, Italy, with 22 people on board.

The company’s CEO cast doubt on the incident, as the vessels are “the safest in the absolute sense” and the yacht “had no defects”. “This incident seems like an incredible story even from a technical point of view,” he added.

Five bodies have been found so far, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch. The other bodies are those of Jonathan Bloomer, president of Morgan Stanley International, his wife Anne Elizabeth, and lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Nadia. The person still missing is Mike Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah Lynch.

The sinking is under investigation by Italian authorities, but there are no arrests or suspects yet. The 56-metre (186-foot) British-flagged yacht Bayesian sank early on Monday morning after being caught in a storm. Of the 22 people on board, 15 were rescued alive.
