The 58-year-old Spanish truck driver was detained on Thursday evening by GNR officers in Viana do Castelo, in Matosinhos, after being chased for more than 50 kilometres along the A28 motorway. During the subsequent actions, the driver of the heavy vehicle failed to obey various orders to stop and attempted to ram the HP vehicles on several occasions.
The chase began at around 10:00 pm in Vilar de Muros, Caminha. The driver was arrested almost an hour later in Perafita, Matosinhos, with the assistance of the Porto GNR traffic squad.
The truck driver was drunk. He was caught with an alcohol level of more than 1.2 grams per liter. In addition to drunk driving, he is also charged with dangerous driving, as well as resisting and coercing military officers.
