Requests for consultations with the Registry of Convicts of Sexual Crimes Against Children reached their highest level in 2022 at 1,265 in a database of nearly 6,500 pedophiles, according to the Justice Department.
In a response sent to the Lusa agency, the Ministry of Justice reports that 6493 pedophiles are included in the criminal identification register of those convicted of sexual crimes against children, created in March 2015.

Last year, the registry included data on 350 people convicted of sexual abuse of children.
Conviction verification requests for those convicted of sex crimes against children are registering an annual increase, with 1,265 requests filed last year, a record since its inception and an increase of almost 77% compared to 2021, when 716 requests were filed . . . .

Criminal records are available only to magistrates for the purposes of criminal investigation, authorities competent to investigate or instruct, responsible for international cooperation in the prevention and suppression of crimes, and the General Directorate for Reintegration and Prison Services and the Protection of Children and Youth.
The Ministry of Justice indicates that “citizens exercising parental responsibilities for minors under the age of 16 through the police authorities still have access to information, provided that they prove their place of residence, school attendance and proof of parental responsibilities for a minor, when it’s a legitimate fear.”
This registry, created in 2015, includes the names, ages, residences, and crimes of individuals convicted of sexual offenses in which the victim is a minor.
According to the law, the system of criminal identification records contains data on aggressors for five years when a fine or imprisonment for a term of up to one year is applied to them, and for 10 years in case of punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of one to five years. . . .
Data will be available for 15 years if a penalty of five to 10 years in prison is applied. If a convict is convicted for a term of more than 10 years, his data will be stored in the register for 20 years.
