A young Spanish woman in her 20s was killed and two people were injured in a landslide on Friday at Levada da Agua de Alto in Faial, Madeira, the commander of the Santana Volunteer Fire Department said.
The other two people “didn’t appear to be serious victims,” but were taken to a local medical center primarily for “emotional distress,” according to a Santana fire department deputy.
“It is assumed that this is a family, parents and a daughter,” he added.
The collapse site is a popular tourist destination.
Santana volunteer firefighters and Machico firefighters are on scene.
According to Santana Mayor Dinarte Fernandes, the collapse was not caused by the fire that has been raging in Madeira for more than a week.
