Cavaco Silva remembers the man who helped the country ‘find the right path’

Former President of the Republic Anibal Cavaco Silva remembered this Saturday João Salgueiro, who died on Friday at the age of 88, as a man who, with his knowledge, sought to help the country “find the right course”.

“It is with sadness that I received the news of the death of Dr. Joao Salgueiro, a man who sought, through his economic knowledge and his political and civic intervention, to help our country find the right course,” reads the note sent by Agência Lusa.

Cavaco Silva, in particular, highlighted the role of Joao Salgueiro as one of the founders of SEDES. [Associação para o Desenvolvimento Económico e Social]”an association that has made an important contribution to identifying the reforms needed to build an ambitious Portugal and has always remained a very active member.”

“Life crossed my path with that of Joao Salgueiro, somewhat unexpectedly, at the Congress of Figueira da Foz, in which we challenged the leadership of the PSD. I have always maintained a good relationship with Dr. Joao Salgueiro, at various times taking his advice. is based on solid economic thinking,” recalled Cavaco Silva.

The former president also recalled the awarding of the economist with the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ on June 10, 2010, calling it “recognition of the contribution” he made to the country as a ruler and as a citizen, and what I want now, at the time of his departure, he wanted to repeat.

“On my behalf and on behalf of my wife, I express my deepest condolences to your family,” he said.

Former Minister Joao Salgueiro died on Friday at the age of 88, the President of the Republic announced.

João Salgueiro was awarded in December 2021 by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Infante D. Enrique at the closing of the 5th Headquarters Congress.

The Economist was the founder and later President of Sedes, an Association for Economic and Social Development, created in 1970, soon joined by Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.

With a degree in economics, João Salgueiro was Under Secretary of State for Planning until 25 April 1974 between 1969 and 1971 and then Minister of State for Finance and Planning between 1981 and 1983.

He was also an MP elected by the PSD, Vice Governor of the Banco de Portugal, President of the Banco de Fomento Exterior, Director of the Caixa Geral de Depósitos and Vice President of the Economic and Social Council.

In 1985, João Salgueiro faced Cavaco Silva for the PSD leadership and lost by 57 votes.

On Friday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stressed that “Portugal lost today [17 de fevereiro] one of its most brilliant economists of the second half of the twentieth century.
