Portuguese shoes give new life to coffee grounds, apple peels and plastic bottles.

Rice, coffee grounds, apple peel or plastic bottles are examples of the “new generation of products” used by the Portuguese footwear industry, which wants to consider itself “an international benchmark in the development of sustainable solutions”.

“The shoe cluster has taken on the vision of becoming an international benchmark in the development of sustainable solutions, strengthening Portuguese exports based on a highly competitive national manufacturing base based on knowledge and innovation,” states Associação Portuguesa dos Industriais do Calçado, Componentes. , Leather goods and substitutes (APICCAPS).

In this sense, the BioShoes4All project is developing a new generation of products, for example using materials such as rice, coffee grounds, apple peels or plastic bottles, on the basis that “nothing goes to waste”. everything is changing.”

As quoted in a statement released by APICCAPS, the project coordinator explains that BioShoes4All “is committed to promoting radical change in materials, technologies, processes and products for footwear and leather goods, creating sustainable solutions that are economically valuable in the international market.” .

“This ambition is supported by the consortium of excellence we have created, consisting of 70 partners from different sectors, from biological resources, materials, chemicals, components, footwear, leather goods to manufacturers of manufacturing technologies and “software”, waste. recovery, merchants and retailers who will share resources, risks and opportunities together,” says María José Ferreira.

According to this official, “In the next three years, about 50 new products with a better ecological footprint will be developed, 25 industrial pilot lines will be implemented, more than 50 publications will be carried out, and a large number of distribution, promotion and training activities will be carried out. “.

Thus, co-funded by the Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PRR), the BioShoes4All project aims to “develop and manufacture new biomaterials and components, as well as eco-products for footwear and leather goods, based on the principles of a circular bioeconomy and sustainable development in all its dimensions” .

The goal is to create “differentiated solutions valued by customers and consumers that promote the development of a new sustainable bioeconomy, the efficient use of regional and national bioresources and decarbonization.”

In addition, its goal is to “develop and apply new approaches and technologies aimed at minimizing and assessing industrial and post-consumer waste, as well as flexible and environmentally efficient production of materials, components, footwear and leather products with less environmental impact, recycled and /or reusable in the context of a green, digital, competitive circular economy.”

Thus, APICCAPS emphasizes, this contributes to the increase in the life cycle of materials, more efficient management of material and energy resources, carbon neutrality, combating climate change and increasing the competitiveness of the industry on an international scale.

As the association explained, BioShoes4All is divided into five main areas of activity: biomaterials (pillar 1), ecological footwear (pillar 2), circular economy (pillar 3), advanced manufacturing technologies (pillar 4) and training and promotion (pillar 5) . ).

To achieve the goals, it envisaged a “broad and complementary range of activities”, namely “research, development and innovation from the process of industrial research to transfer to the market”, “innovation in terms of processes and organization, including new directions of production and productive investments” and ” training, communication and wide promotion of the project and the “cluster” on a national and international scale, including content aimed at consumers, companies and institutions.

Component 1 “BioShoes4All” proposes the study and development of new bio-skins, biomaterials, biocomposites, components and processes by incorporating bio-based materials, including biomass and agro-industrial by-products, reducing the use of mainly basic materials, fossil fuels, increasing resource efficiency and eliminating critical substances.

Direction 2 involves the development of methodological studies of ecodesign and the ecological footprint of products, new concepts of ecological footwear and leather goods with a lower environmental impact, durable, maintainable, recyclable, differentiated, individualized with high added value.

Direction 3, in turn, aims to develop and demonstrate solutions for the recovery/recovery of the main types of industrial waste in the “cluster” and the initiation of the recovery of used products, “increasing the circularity of production processes in all value chains and industrial symbioses.” .

Component 4 will provide innovative technologies for the “vertical and horizontal digitization of the 4.0 shoe cluster”, namely solutions for tracking production processes and products, advanced planning, automation / robotization of critical manufacturing operations and the introduction of environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.

Finally, Component 5 will continue “preparing and delivering training events and global promotion and dissemination of the project, in conjunction with the work to be done under each of the Components.”
