Former coach Christoph Daum, who led Stuttgart to the league title in 1992, died on Saturday at the age of 70, the German Football League (DFL) said on Sunday.
Daum has been battling lung cancer since 2022 and has not coached a team for seven years, when he coached the Romanian national team from 2016 to 2017.
In a coaching career spanning more than three decades, he has coached Cologne, VfB Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, as well as spending time abroad with Besiktas, Austria Wien, Fenerbahce, Club Brugge, Bursaspor and, finally, the Romania national team.
He added to his resume the German championship title with Stuttgart in the 1991/92 season and the German Super Cup with the same club, as well as winning the Austrian league and three Turkish leagues.
“The news of Christoph Daum’s death has plunged Stuttgart into deep sadness. Everyone at the club remembers him as one of the most influential people in German football, to whom Stuttgart owes a lot. He will never be forgotten,” the five-time German champion club responded on social media.
