Uruguayan player Maxi Araujo arrived at Lisbon airport this Sunday to strengthen Sporting. “Very happy,” he suggested.
The left winger arrived at the Lions from Toluca, where former Sporting player Paulinho plays. “I’m here to play and be a champion,” he added.
Sporting are expected to pay around 14 million euros for the 26-year-old Uruguayan. Araujo arrives in competitive mode, as the Mexican championship is underway (he played in five matches, scoring two goals).
With Nuno Santos recovering from injury, the South American left-winger could be a short-term bet for Ruben Amorim. He has the attributes the coach likes: he is quick, a good crosser and has a good shot on goal.
Araujo will be Sporting’s third reinforcement for the 2024/25 season, following goalkeeper Kovacevic and centre-back Debast. But he will not be the last. SAD, led by Frederico Varandas, remains active in the market, trying to give Ruben Amorim an alternative attack after Paulinho left for Toluca last June.
Greek Ioannidis remains a priority, but his signing is becoming increasingly difficult due to the asking price of Panathinaikos.
