This Sunday, the President of the Republic congratulated the Portuguese canoeists on winning six medals at the World Canoe Sprint Championships, held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan).
In a note published on the official website of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa believes that the result is “constant proof of the merits of national canoeing.”
Portugal finished its participation in the World Canoe Sprint Championships with six medals: two gold, three silver and one bronze.
Portugal managed to win the men’s K1 200 and mixed K2 500 races, and also took podium places in the women’s K2 200, men’s K1 500, men’s K1 5000 and mixed K4 500.
After highlighting the “outstanding performance” of the four medal-winning canoeists – Fernando Pimenta, Francisco Laia, Messias Baptista and Teresa Portela – the president extended “congratulations” to “the coaches, clubs, Federation, families and friends without whose support in good and less good moments, such results would not have been possible.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also took the opportunity to celebrate Portugal’s “best participation ever” at the World University Canoe Championships, which ended on Saturday at the Montemor-o-Velho Navigation Centre, with a haul of 11 medals, six of which were gold.
