The Deputy General Secretary of the PS this Saturday urged the PSD president to clarify “once and for all” his relationship with the far right, warning that the Social Democrats risk becoming the “broom” of the opposition in Portugal.
At the opening of an initiative organized by the PS dedicated to migration, João Torres noted that on this issue, the right reacted “biasedly” when the socialists defend “solidarity”.
“The democratic right has a moral duty not to allow itself to be infected by the dangerous discourse of indifference. The time has come – and it is already too late – in the name of democratic parchments and the historical role of the co-founding party of our constitutional regime, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, Dr. Luis Montenegro, once and for all, make clear to the Portuguese and tell him how far he is ready to go in relations with the extreme right,” he called He.
According to João Torres, “You can’t trust anyone who, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, defends the same thing as the most reactionary force on the Portuguese political spectrum, and then, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, resents, facing the deplorable drift of ideology in which I wanted to dive.”
“In view of his latest statements, in which he, in fact, defends the same thing as Chega, it is necessary to remind the leader of the SDP about the old and wise commandment of our people: “who does not want to be a wolf, does not wear his skin,” he noted and added that with PS, “there is no lack of clarity or hesitation” in terms of migration.
“We stand for an inclusive society that is able to treat immigrants the way we want any Portuguese who decides to emigrate to be treated in the host country,” he said, dismissing what he called “the right-wing utilitarian magnifying glass.”
The Deputy General Secretary of the PS considered that the SDP “condemns itself with this constant conflicting position, the cruel dose of unpreparedness that is conspicuous, and the failure to put forward a serious and credible proposal. become the broom of the opposition parties” in Portugal.
“I am very sorry, and we are certainly sorry for everyone, Portugal deserved an opposition leadership that is very different from what our country has today,” he said.
Joao Torres also criticized the way PSD has responded to the measures announced by the government this week in the area of housing.
“The reaction of the parties on the right to the ambitious package of measures that the government has presented and which will now be in the process of public discussion, in which we want to be open and participate, is the clearest demonstration that we have had a divorce date between these very parties. and the specific problems that people face,” he said.
For João Torres, this is a sector in which “the right, and in particular the PSD, are in tow and have nothing new to offer or add”, saying that “for the right, it seems like everything should remain the same”. .
On Friday, the SDP president said he was “greatly disappointed” by the government’s response to the housing crisis, which he said exposed “the prime minister as a survivor and a communist.”
Luis Montenegro said that the package “was presented after seven years of complete inactivity of the government and Dr. António Costa in the field of housing”, and emphasized that the measures “are far from those that were the principles and ideas that the PSD presented two days before the government”, citing on the document published on Tuesday by the Social Democrats with proposals for the sector.
