Mozambican police have foiled an attempt to sell three children in Nampula, northern Mozambique, and arrested three suspects involved in the case, a corporate source told Lusa on Tuesday.
“All those detained are confessors. The couple were planning to sell a child who was kidnapped in the Natikiri area. [cidade de Nampula] and his two children,” said Enina Tsinine, a spokeswoman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) in Nampula.
According to a spokesman, the child kidnapped on the 20th was rescued from captivity in the city of Nampula, the provincial capital, and there is also information that another is in captivity in the district of Lalaua in the same province.
“The defendants themselves provided information about another child and stated that he was there by agreement with another gang. [de tráfico]”, – added Sernik.
Three suspects, a married couple and the woman’s brother, were detained between Sunday and Monday, Enina Tsinine said, adding that an investigation was underway to rescue another child believed to be in captivity.
According to the Mozambique Attorney General’s Office in July 2023, there were at least 38 victims of human trafficking in Mozambique who had been trafficked to South Africa.
