According to Negócios, the government is preparing a merger of five energy sector bodies: the General Directorate of Energy and Geology (DGEG), the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology, the National Directorate of the Energy Sector, the Energy Agency and the Mining Company. Paulo Carmona, president of the Portuguese Taxpayers Association and former IL activist, was announced on Friday as Jerónimo Cunha’s replacement as director general of energy and geology and is set to head the new structure, which will have the configuration of a public institution, a legal entity with greater financial and administrative autonomy. AD’s election program already spoke of “reforming the state regulatory and management institutions in the energy sector” and “technical and personnel training of the DGEG and other national state energy institutions and agencies, given their merger.” The reorganization involves cutting management positions, and it is currently unclear what will happen to the directors of the companies involved.
