Two men were arrested on suspicion of aggression, resistance and coercion against police officers early Saturday morning in Leiria, the Public Security Police (PSP) announced on Sunday.
According to a statement from the Leiria PSP District Command, the first situation occurred in the city of Caldas da Rainha “following a family dispute on a public road where the police were called and with their presence it appears to have been resolved.”
Minutes later, PSP was alerted to another dispute: Agents found “the suspect was still very upset and yelling at his partner, who was holding their daughter on her lap,” the statement said.
According to the PSP, despite attempts to “calm the situation,” the attacker took the child from the mother and headed to his car, after which one of the police officers, concerned for the safety and well-being of the child, attempted to raise awareness of someone who may not be in the best condition to drive.”
“This call for attention made the suspect even more aggressive and he impulsively abandoned his vehicle, almost allowing the child to fall to the ground,” the statement said, explaining that the officer, “while attempting to avoid falling, was attacked with a headbutt and several blows to the head.”
The 32-year-old man, “who had previously been cited for a number of offences involving assault, theft and threats”, was eventually arrested after other police officers intervened.
The second arrest for crimes of resistance and coercion against an employee, as well as for violation of qualified physical integrity, occurred in Marinha Grande “following a situation of aggression between several citizens.”
PSP said the 59-year-old man, “even despite the presence of police at the location, maintained an aggressive posture at all times, threatening and challenging the officers present.”
“In an attempt to change his behaviour, he persisted in his hostile behaviour, physically assaulted one of the officers, pushing him and challenging him to a fight, after which he was arrested,” the PSP explains.
The defendant is accused of allegedly “committing various crimes related to physical injury and drug trafficking,” the statement said.
The two suspects who were on duty at the court were released and warned to appear before the judicial authority at their place of residence, the PSP explained, adding that “the attacks did not result in any serious injuries to the police officers involved.”
