A citizen has been accused of causing a major fire that raged for 13 days in August on the island of Madeira, the Ministry of State (MP) announced on Monday.
“There is already a defendant,” said Isabel Diaz, the coordinator of the parliament in the autonomous region, in a written response sent to the Lusa agency.
On Thursday, the Judicial Police (PJ) reported that the fire, which broke out between August 14 and 26, was caused by the launch of rockets in the parish of Serra de Água, Ribeira Brava municipality, in the western zone of the island, confirming information released that day DN Madeirawhich also took into account the defendant’s constitution.
In a statement, the SP explained that following an investigation by the Madeira Criminal Investigation Department, “it was established that the fire was caused by the launch of missiles.”
“The investigation carried out, namely through the collection of relevant statements, analysis of the circumstances, meteorological information, official information from various entities, as well as evidentiary analysis of various elements, made it possible to establish both the location and those responsible for the launch of the missile,” the note says.
However, the Accounts Chamber did not specify at the time whether arrests had been made or whether the names of the accused had been announced.
A rural fire on the island of Madeira broke out on August 14 in the mountains of the municipality of Ribeira Brava, gradually spreading to the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol and Santana.
On Monday, August 26, 13 days later, the regional civil defense department reported that the fire was “completely extinguished.”
According to the European Forest Fire Information System, the area of burnt land exceeds 5,104 hectares, although regional authorities reported 5,116 hectares.
As the fire raged, authorities ordered nearly 200 people to leave their homes as a precaution and set up community shelters, but many residents returned home.
Firefighting efforts were hampered by wind and high temperatures, but there were no reports of injuries or destruction of homes or important public infrastructure, according to the regional government, although some small-scale agricultural production and forested areas were damaged.
