Every day in England, 60 children are suspended or expelled from school for racism

Every day in England, 60 children under the age of four are suspended or expelled from school for racism, a new study has found. Mirror had access, 11,619 children were sent home last year for alleged racist behaviour, while 1,413 children were still in primary school. The figures indicate an increase of about 25% compared to 2022.

“These figures should serve as a warning. We have had years of division and hate speech, as well as negative and racist stereotyping from some politicians and members of the media,” said Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union for England.

He said hate speech on social media and racist views that parents may have negatively impact children’s behaviour.

The Department for Education in England has assured that racism and discrimination have no place in schools or in society. “Children should learn to have respectful relationships, in person and online, and understand the importance of valuing differences,” a spokesman said.

Hate speech and incitement to violence are issues that have received particular attention in England. In July, a 17-year-old murdered three children, one of whom was Portuguese, who were attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport. The attack was reported to have sparked riots and unrest across the city.
