Concentration of six obstetric emergencies and birth blocks does not mean closure

The concentration of six OB/GYN emergency departments and maternity wards in the north, center and in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley does not mean the closure or cessation of planned activities in the hospitals in question. So say 18 experts who proposed the reorganization of these services. “The concentration will result in activities related to emergency care, childbirth and neonatal care being moved to another institution,” the proposal for a network of hospital referrals in obstetrics, gynecology and neonatology says.

The experts explain that medical workers from target hospitals will have to negotiate with the institution “to provide weekly emergency care in another location”, while the planned activities will remain unchanged. The Ordem dos Enfermeiros (OE) criticizes the proposal, stating “inaccuracies and failures”, and considers the exclusion of nurses from the group as serious. “This is an option based essentially on medical vision. This reduces, conditions and creates an important bias towards the set target,” says OE.
