Footballer Sergio Ramos announced this Thursday that his career with the Spanish national team has come to an end after a call from a manager who will no longer have the 36-year-old Paris Saint-Germain defender.
“It’s time to say goodbye to the national team, our dear and interesting swarm. This morning I got a call from the current national team manager. [Luis De La Fuente] saying that this does not count and that it will not count on me, no matter what level I can show or how to continue my sports career, ”wrote the centre-back on the social network Instagram.
The veteran defender, who has made 180 caps for Spain, laments that “a journey that I expected to be longer” is coming to an end and cited two players he shared a dressing room with at Real Madrid as an example: the Croat Luka Modric and the Portuguese. Pepe.
“Unfortunately, this is coming to the end of a journey that I hoped would be longer and end up with a better taste in the mouth, along with all the success we have had with our Roja. Because being young or less young is not a virtue or a disadvantage, it is just a temporary trait that is not necessarily related to performance or skill. I look with admiration and envy at Modric, Messi, Pepe… essence, tradition, values, meritocracy and fairness in football,” he said.
However, Ramos assures that he is “very grateful and with his head held high” for all the years that he has represented Spain at the highest level.
“I take with me lasting memories, all the titles we fought for and celebrated together, and great pride in being the Spanish player with the most caps. This emblem, this jersey and this group of fans, you all made me happy.” he concluded.
Sergio Ramos played 180 times for the Spanish national team, winning two European Championships in 2008 and 2012 and a World Cup in 2010.
