The deadline for submitting invoices and households ends today

Taxpayers have until this Monday to reconcile NIF accounts for expenses incurred in 2022 and file any missing items as this is also the last day to notify the household.

These are two steps in preparation for filing an annual IRS return, which begins on April 1st and affects the amount of tax each taxpayer must pay or receive (by way of a refund).

In the case of households, the filing deadline is usually February 15, but this year the government decided to extend it until Monday.

Thus, taxpayers had 12 more days to update the composition of the household with the Revenue and Customs (AT), thereby ensuring that the IRS estimate takes into account any changes that may have occurred over the past year.

This message is especially relevant if there have been changes in the household during the previous year following a death, marriage, divorce, adoption or birth of children, a change in parental agreement, or a change of permanent residence.

Without this updated information, AT will take into account the personal and family data contained in the IRS return filed last year.

The Household Update can be done through the Financial Portal and now is a good time to also indicate situations in which children are over the age at which they are no longer considered dependents for IRS purposes.

As in the case of household communication, the deadline for families with students relocated to educational institutions in the interior or autonomous region has also been extended until this Monday to report relevant expenses, including rent.

It should be remembered that since 2019 there has been an increase in the cost of tuition for students relocated to the interior or autonomous areas for the purposes of the IRS.

This Monday is also the last day for taxpayers to reconcile, validate and file invoices for expenses incurred over the past year, and forward those pending to the appropriate deduction box.

Also in this case, the deadline has “shifted” by two days, since it’s usually a task that needs to be completed before February 25th.

Since the IRS reform in 2015, IRS deductions are linked to invoices for expenses incurred by taxpayers and to which they have linked their NIFs.

Invoices thus allow a reduction in the amount of tax that each taxpayer has to pay, although in the case of education, health and housing expenses, one can exclude the deductible amount calculated and pre-filled by Tributária e Aduaneira (AT ) on the IRS return and indicate another based on invoices that have been saved and have NIF.

After this step of verifying invoices, taxpayers will still be able to view deductible expenses and complain about invoices/general household expenses from March 16 to March 31.

Delivery of an IRS return or confirmation of an automatic return must be made between April 1 and June 30.
